Comet 1999 S4 Linear

Image taken 7/06/00 at Cherry Springs State Park in Northern PA with Starlight Xpress MX5-16 CCD Camera and a 10" Meade LX-200 telescope at f/3.3 . Image processed in Photoshop 4.0 and Star M5 Software from Starlight Xpress. This image was a collaboration between Gary Honis and me. We used Gary's 10" LX-200 and my Starlight Xpress MX5 CCD Camera to take a number of images. This was the longest one, an unguided 5 minute exposure. We were unable to guide with the STAR2000 self-guider because I did not take my computer with me and didn't have the new software along on the trip to use on Gary's computer. Maybe next time.

Stellar limiting magnitude is approximately Mag 17.5.

Here are some animations of the comet. The exposures were 2 minutes in length and the next one followed immediately after the previous exposure had finished.

Here is a 15 Frame animation of 2 minute exposures. The first one is full size and the following one is 1/2 size.

Here is a 21 frame animation of 1 minute exposures. The first one is full size and the following one is 1/2 size.

All animations were done with GIF Construction Set from Alchemy Mindworks, available as shareware. You can also find more images and animations at Gary's C/1999 S4 Page on the GHAAS Web Site

Below is an image which I also added a logarithmic stretch to in order to really enhance the tail.
